Preventing Fainting in Clinic
Challenge: Fainting (caused by a reflex called a vasovagal reaction) can occur frequently in clinical settings. While updated best practice guidelines exist to help prevent these episodes, training implementation, especially for non-provider staff, is often inconsistent, despite these team members frequently being the first to recognize symptoms and intervene.
Solution: In collaboration with Envsion Sexual and Reproductive Health, I adapted provider-focused source material into two learner-centered resources designed for all patient-facing clinic staff:
A 10-minute interactive eLearning course
A printable job aid for quick reference in clinical settings
The training was designed to help staff confidently recognize, prevent, and respond to vasovagal reactions through realistic scenarios, accessible language, and practical workplace application.
Disclaimer: This project is presented for portfolio purposes only as an example of instructional design and educational content development work. Clinical content was reviewed in collaboration with qualified healthcare professionals. This material is not intended to serve as standalone medical advice, diagnosis, treatment guidance, or official clinical protocol.

Design + Development
-
Learners work through realistic clinic situations and practice responding to patients at risk for or showing early signs of a vasovagal reaction. Scenarios were inspired by real experiences from outpatient healthcare settings.
-
Learners reinforce prevention strategies through:
patient communication practice
decision-making scenarios
guided free-response activities
intervention planning across different stages of care
-
The course was written for both provider and non-provider staff, using approachable language to explain clinical concepts clearly without oversimplifying the content.
-
Content was structured into four key prevention steps to keep information concise, easy to follow, and manageable within a busy clinical environment.
-
I designed the course visuals to feel approachable, recognizable, and aligned with the organization’s existing brand identity by incorporating elements of their established color palette throughout the experience.
Because the topic inherently involves imagery that can feel stressful for some learners, I wanted the course to feel less clinical and intimidating while still remaining professional. I drew inspiration from the playful, hand-drawn style of Open Peeps to create a learning environment that felt warm, friendly, and clear.
To maintain a cohesive visual style across the course, I also created several custom illustrations. All graphics that don’t include a face were created by me in Adobe Illustrator (and sometimes edited with additional Canva elements).
Job Aid
I designed a one-page performance support job aid summarizing the course’s four key fainting prevention steps for quick reference in clinical settings. The resource was created to be easily posted in shared staff spaces, helping reinforce learning, support workflow reminders, and encourage consistent preventative practices throughout the clinic day.
“Mo approached the project having done an excellent job preparing herself; thoroughly researching the topic as well as my own work on the subject. She was gracious when I offered feedback and cheerfully implemented any necessary changes. When content was challenging to present, she creatively navigated effective solutions. The result of Mo’s work is a thoughtfully designed learning experience that is highly accessible and easy to navigate. She created a clear structure for the course that makes learning feel intuitive which made the content engaging throughout. The visually inviting design helped maintain interest and focus without feeling overwhelming.”
