Bloodborne Pathogen Safety
Challenge: Knotty Pines Senior Community’s annual staff compliance training on bloodborne pathogen safety was dated and ineffective. It offered limited opportunities for staff to practice applying safety procedures in real-world care settings.
Solution: I redesigned the training into an interactive eLearning course where learners move through realistic workplace scenarios, practice decision-making, and apply OSHA safety procedures in context.
Note: This project was created for this portfolio based on the eLearning Designer’s Academy April 2025 eLearning challenge. Knotty Pines Senior Community is a fictional company.

-
Learners interact with realistic patient-care situations through patient and colleague dialogues, decision-making activities, and workplace scenarios.
-
Activities included:
Selecting appropriate PPE for different situations
Managing exposure incidents
Ordering the correct steps for cleaning a blood spill
Identifying when hand hygiene is required
Applying OSHA safety procedures through scenario-based questions
-
A “hero character” guides learners through the course with tips, encouragement, and feedback to create a more approachable and supportive experience.
-
I know from experience many bloodborne pathogen trainings can not only feel dry, but the imagery of the course can also feel stressful due to the subject matter. I wanted to not only help the learner feel more at ease, but also to be better able to retain information. I intentionally designed the course with:
Accessible language for all ranges of positions
Clean layouts and minimal on-screen text
Visually calming design choices
Consistent branding and intuitive navigation
The goal was to keep learners actively engaged without overwhelming them with information.

Action Map
I used action mapping as part of the brainstorming process to connect the training directly to the behaviors staff need to perform to reduce bloodborne pathogen transmission risk. Focusing on actions like selecting PPE, practicing hand hygiene, and responding to exposure incidents helped keep the course centered on practical application and universal precautions rather than passive information delivery.
Storyboard
I created a visual storyboard in PowerPoint that included slide mockups, on-screen text, audio scripting, and technical development notes for interactions and navigation. Storyboarding helped me organize the learner experience before development and created a clear blueprint that streamlined the build process in Articulate Storyline 360.
